Thanks. I can't even begin to imagine taking it apart. I've seen and read about it in the manual, and it looks daunting. I remember the day after I got my DAF, I put it on blocks and put it in forward and ran it, and it ran fine....so I'm not even touching the insides. I'm still working on the outside; little rusty and grimy.

Here's a photo I thought you might be interested in. This is a look inside the Primary Gearbox (and that's all it is...a gearbox) which controls forward, neutral & reverse.

John, Do you have all the info on the Variomatic Transmission? What I mean is a parts list, how it all works....
The reason I'm asking is that a guy here in MA is offering me a Variomatic he has in his garage but would not even know where to begin with this thing.

I do have all the factory information on the Variomatic here in my archives.
If someone is offering you one...GRAB IT!
Here's a photo showing what some of the parts & pieces are called-

How it all works? Some of it is explained on the main website. If you need more you can give me a shout.

Wow...here is a specialty Variomatic for you to look at.
This is the "Super" Vario DAF used in the successful Formula race cars during the mid 1960's.

Now that's a vario! How did that fare up against the other Formula race cars? Where is that located? The DAF museum in Holland?

I believe that racing car is in the Daf museum of Eindhoven.
I know Formula One is less popular over there than it is over here, but one of the teams, Williams, a few years ago designed a variomatic gearbox for their F1 car but it got outlawed before it was raced.
Hopefully this link below will work and prove interesting reading.

Thanks for that link Pete...it was interesting.
The DAF Variomatic raced in Formula 3 (which does not exist anymore) and was quite successful when it ran the circuits. Rob Slotemaker was the main driver for DAF and scored high in a few notable races such as Monte Carlo.
The DAF Museum owns four of the famous Formula 3 cars now.
